CORPORATE EVENT PHOTOGRAPHY
Photographing Your Big Event
Corporate Event Photography covers a wide area. Corporate events take many forms – perhaps as many as the kinds of business that have them! Parties to celebrate anniversaries or big company successes often need to be recorded in photographs – partly for the immediate boost of posting on social media, but also to form an ongoing record of the company’s history. Awards ceremonies are more frequent than you may think, and pictures of winners with their awards are essential in subsequent press releases and so on.
I have been privileged to photograph the launch events for a number of companies. These are very special occasions, often the culmination of awesome amounts of work by a handful of people, and having a sympathetic photographer’s eye on hand is a must.
Corporate events also covers the big annual rites of passage of educational institutions: installations and graduations, welcomes and farewells.
I have covered conferences and congresses of various types, where large conference hall meetings are interspersed by smaller-scale fringe events. Working a big congress with my camera, as part of a media team delivering material to Social Media in real time, is exhilarating, demanding and enormous fun!
I enjoy being part of the action in a big event. As an event photographer you need to be able to blend in, to be inconspicuous, but also to interact with people to set them at their ease and make them comfortable as you arrive with the camera. Some people love to see the lens aimed at them; others definitely do not, and quick sensitivity and total respect have to be observed.
The creativity involved in photographing events is part of the fun too. Difficult lighting, big spaces, moments that come and are gone very quickly – these are all challenges for the photographer. I often find that I use the full range of my lenses – from the 500mm down to the 12mm fish-eye. I love events shoots!
