I love photographing a good party! Family events photography can take many forms, but it’s “Big Birthday” parties that most often call on the services of a family events photographer. Those are the days when you get the whole gang together, when you want some decent pictures of everyone, including the person who normally takes them, and when you want to see people, and not be held down by needing to think about picture taking.

I have been asked to photograph family and friends gatherings of all sizes and all types.  On two occasions I have been asked to take photos at a funeral, but I have also had enquiries for christenings, 100th birthdays, major wedding anniversaries and the rest.

You never know quite what you are going to get at family events and parties in terms of lighting, backdrops and what the family want, so knowing your cameras and being flexible is the name of the game. Being personable and friendly is also essential. Often I have had some link with my clients, but even when I don’t, a photographer must be able to “click” (excuse the pun!) with people very quickly.

One of the nicest things that people say to me is “Oh! – you’ve really got him/her!” after I’ve captured something of the personality of someone I had never met before the shoot. That is always my aim – a straightforward style that captures people as they really are.
