The Wedding of Peter and Ruth

This was a fairly early wedding in my career as a wedding photographer, but I have included it as it was just so creative and colourful – a truly rainbow day! In fact, I have a blog post dedicated to the day as well – see here.

Ruth wore a vintage midi white dress which suited her down to the… knee, while her Bridesmaids wore black. This unusual colour allowed every possible accessory to be organised to create a full rainbow effect across her seven maids. Shawls, necklaces, bouquets, nail varnish and shoes were all coordinated – as were the brollies, in case of bad weather! As it was, an umbrella shot just had to be done!

The Groomsmen were also colour coordinated. Cravats, handkerchiefs, cuff-links, buttonholes and socks all did the work, although it seems that it is difficult to get a full rainbow in socks!

The Bride and Groom were then free to wear rainbows – or mainly white, in Peter’s case. The wedding cake was a rainbow sponge, rainbow wellies were worn… with clear blue skies and bright sunlight it was a dynamic day for photography, if a bit of a challenge to get the shadows soft in the portraits.

I knew the groom a little through his family, but it was the bride, Ruth, who contacted me about doing the wedding photography on their big day. The wedding was at the parish church in their village, followed by a marquee reception in a riverside hotel nearby.

I was due to photograph the wedding on my own, but my son happened to be there as a guest, and I gave him my second body with a good portrait lens on it. He delivered some crackers – especially in the group photos where he worked from the side while I organised the groups and photographed from the front.

All in all, a great day. I am very grateful to Tom for his input, and to Peter and Ruth for asking me to photograph their wedding. I believe the creativity won them “Wedding of the Year” in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire – well deserved!
