The Wedding of Gary and Sue

Wedding couples come in all ages, and it is a special pleasure to photograph weddings of couples who have found love outside their teens, so to speak. Very often mature couples want a fairly low key approach, although it is sometimes the children (as here) who push mum and dad with “You must have a proper photographer!” Quite right too!

Often weddings of “older” couples have a special place for the group shots, as children and grandchildren are all together, sometimes for the first time. The group photography at Gary and Sue’s London wedding was certainly important. I think we were able to give them adequate time to get great portraits of them as a couple, too.

This wedding was photographed as the UK came out of the second lockdown, so some restrictions were still in place. The only indoor events involving larger numbers involved food (as was the law!) and the ceremony itself with a select number of guests occurred outside. In that period we got used to shooting some very small, intimate weddings, and really enjoyed it.

The wedding took place at Sarah’s main place of work – the Salvation Army Training College (William Booth College) opposite Denmark Hill Station in Camberwell, SE London. This venue has become our most frequent location for weddings: I am virtually “house photographer” here for Salvation Army events, and we often photograph weddings of students (and in this case staff!) at the college.

My photo of the day is probably this one. Confetti is always rather a matter of luck (wind and rain can play havoc) and that was especially the case with the very small weddings that Covid imposed on us. I was so glad to get this of the happy couple  in their nuptial Gold Buggy!
