Andrew contacted me about doing some photos after I photographed his sister’s wedding. He needed actor headshots and also photographs of him dancing, particularly wanting to get images that showed him apparently flying. He had in mind a location up on the downs near Bedford, and we did about an hour there around sunset, followed by a half hour or so at his home.

Up on the downs I got down very low – lying, as I recall, in a mess of thankfully dry cowpat – and using a very wide angle lens to get the effects that my client was looking for. I feel that the results were stunning, and a genuine joint effort between his amazing leaps and my commitment to grovel.

I recognise that actors, dancers and musicians at the beginning of their careers are rarely wealthy people. Many aren’t at any stage in their careers! I am always happy to discuss what can be done within a tight budget.

For me the shoot was great fun – and I hope that the flying shots especially captured a sense of sheer joy in movement and even a kind of religious hope as we worked on getting the photographs Andrew needed. I especially liked the sequence of body shapes we managed to take around the time of sunset.

The camera was the Nikon D700, working with a mix of lenses from 12mm to 300mm! A great shoot.
